2.4 Vs 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands and their use.
“Bands” or “Frequencies” refer to different radio wavelengths used by routers to transmit wifi connections.
The main distinguishing factors between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi connections are - speed and range. A wireless transmission at 2.4 GHz provides the internet to a larger area at the cost of internet speed. 5 GHz provides faster speed but to a smaller area as compared to the 2.4 GHz.
So keeping speed and range in mind the user should figure out what exactly he requires his internet connection for. The 5GHz band, which is the newer of the two, has the potential to cut through network clutter and interface to maximise network performance. It has more channels for communication, and since it’s new to the market it has no competing devices on the band.
Usage factors:
- Size: A larger area will require a wider coverage area and the 2.4 GHz band is best suited for this purpose, because it has a longer range and penetration ability. For smaller homes, flats, or apartments, 5GHz will provide greater speed as well as help with minimum interference from cluttering networks.
- Interference: The 2.4 GHz band is highly prone to interference because of the number of devices that use this frequency band like older routers, microwaves, Bluetooth devices and so on. The 5Ghz is a better option in terms of hassle free connectivity as long as the device isclose to the router/access point.
- Requirements of the devices connected to it: 2.4 Ghz band is better suited for devices such as computers to browse the internet. 5 Ghz is the best option for high-bandwidth devices or activities like gaming and streaming HDTV.
One thing there user should keep in mind is that the modem/router and device are set to use the same frequency for the optimum use of the frequency bandwidth and for better performance and wifi connection.
