WHAT IS SPATIAL AUDIO ON APPLE MUSIC?
Spatial Audio, available for free on Apple and Android devices to anyone who’s subscribed to Apple Music in India, is a giant step forward in how music is perceived and produced. It was created by Dolby Atmos and first introduced, with much expectation, in 2020 by Apple at their WWDC event.
What it does is basically create an immersive experience which virtualises sound wherein you’ve stepped right in the middle of a band performing or an orchestra playing a piece by Beethoven or the like.
Spatial Audio uses Lossless audio files such as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) to preserve every ounce of audio present in a track, therefore enhancing the listening experience of all 75 million catalog sounds available on Apple Music, helping the listener to discover sounds they wouldn’t have heard before in the usual playback environment.
To experience Spatial audio with Dolby Atmos, you need iOS/ iPadOS 14.6 or above on your iPhone and iPad, and MacOS 11.4 or later on your Mac in order for it to work. The best part is that it costs nothing if you are already subscribed to Apple Music. And you do not have to pay extra for it if you are a new subscriber either. And you have the added advantage of listening to Spatial Audio on any pair of headphones, not just the ones provided by Apple. Although, that being said, it works better on the AirPods Pro and the Airpods Max as it requires gyroscope sensors that track the movement of the user's head.
In short you don’t need to be an audiophile to notice the change in your listening experience, just lay back, pair your headphones to your device and allow yourself to be immersed in sweet music.
